Bark Bark!
A Dachshund Welcome!
Originally bred to hunt Badger in Germany, the Dachshund is an active and intelligent breed. Miniature Dachshunds specialize in hunting rabbits. They are funny, loyal, and can be demanding. While some people describe hounds as "stubborn," these qualities of independent thought were essential to their hunting habits and should be valued rather than lamented.
Breed
History
Badger Dogs (originally “Dachs Krieger” or “Badger Warrior”) had likely been developed in Germany as far back as the 15th Century, but the breed came to resemble the modern Dachshund in the 17th and 18th centuries. Dachshund design is deliberate: short legs & long body to pursue game down holes, a “wrap-around” front to facilitate digging, a prominent chest (prow & keel) to provide for robust lungs and to support an elongated spine. Dachshunds started in the Working Group, then moved to the Sporting Group before landing in the Hound Group in 1931.
A boom in the rabbit population in Germany prompted the development of the Miniature Dachshund. Varieties in coat length are likely a result of breeding smooths with longer coats together — and possibly including some spaniel — to produce longhaired dogs and adding terrier to smooth Dachshunds to create the wirehaired variety. Versatility was strongly encouraged & Dachshunds are the only breed designed to engage in tracking, flushing, retrieving, and going to ground — but they are especially designed for the later.
Dachshunds arrived from Germany to the US, and were first recognized by the American Kennel Club. The Dachshund Club of America was the 8th breed club recognized by the AKC.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary loved his Dachshunds, Wadl and Hexl, who were described as “biting, snarling little brutes with jaws measuring half the length of their smooth bodies.” Queen Victoria especially loved Dachshunds. But anti-German sentiment prompted Dachshund fanciers in the United States to call their dogs “Liberty Hounds” to protect them from being attacked and sometimes killed.
Dachshunds remain extremely popular as pets and performance dogs in the United States. They are eligible to compete in the largest number of events sponsored by the American Kennel Club. Dachshunds do especially well in Barn Hunt and EarthDog which require the dog to identify rats under straw and in underground tunnels, respectively.

Health
We believe in science! Testing our dogs and making the results of those tests publically available via the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) for knees, eyes, and hearts is only one way we show our commitment to breeding better Dachshunds. We also work with researchers who are working on the issues of disc disease to ensure we make smart decisions for lifelong health.

Our
Little Family
We breed only occasionally and aim to produce a better dachshund to keep at Dauntless. We are not a kennel, we are a home, and although our dogs are accomplished, they love their lives as our pets.
