New Research About Dachshund IVDD Risk

Exciting new research just published at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine shows promise for breeders concerned with reducing risk of IVDD (disc disease). These two articles are meant to be read together as they explain the genetic mechanism for the iconic short legs in Dachshunds, once thought to be entirely governed by a single gene. Below are the Breeder Summaries and the full scientific article for each of the two topics.

Since there are multiple genes that control the Dachshund’s height, it may be possible to breed dogs with only one copy of the “dwarfism” gene (CDDY) to reduce disc disease significantly.
